By the time you reach SHODAN level you will also know

Nage No Kata

Once obtaining 1st degree you will begin learning the other throws of Kodokan Judo: 8 throws reestablished in the GOKYO NO WAZA plus beginning to learn about 18 Shinmeisho No Waza ( throws)

Of course during your trainining you will do alot of RADORI which is free exercise -- moving around with different partners and practicing throws.

If your teacher studies Judo as a Japanese MARTIAL ART you will learn how to use the techniques in many self defense situations.
If you teacher practices Judo as a sport you will learn how to apply techniques in sport competition and follow rules of sport.

Your TEACHER will GUIDE you during each phase. Have Patience and ENJOY.

Hakkoryu Jujutsu an Kodokan Judo Kodokan Judo

Friedens Lutheran Church
Myerstown, Pennsylvania ( lower level )
minimum age 13

Topic: Do you feel you are too old to study martial arts ?
GOOD NEWS ! You can study martial arts your who life.
Of course in some hardcore arts were the physical activity is high intensity we might want to choose a more moderate due to our age. You just have to find the art that fits you: meaning AGE and PHYSICAL CONDITION.

Hakkoryu Jujutsu was designed FOR YOU. In Japan people of all ages study Hakkoryu Jujutsu from youth, young adults, middle age and SENIORS ( Like Myself ). Hakkoryu Jujutsu was designed for ALL.
The techniques are not meant to be destructive and in fact the tenets of Hakkoryu relay that message: 1. No challenge
2. No resistance
3. No injury

Fantastic for Teachers, Social Workers, Police, Hospital Employees where they have a " USE of FORCE " policy requirement. Don't be misled into thinking that the techniques are too soft as compared to other martial arts. Hakkoryu Jujutsu can increase the response to an assault when required ( Should only be intensified when needed)
Older adults would benefit from Hakkoryu Jujutsu. It gives you opptions and flexibility in your response from mild to severe ( when needed ). Without having to cause injury to the assailant.

To find a Hakkoryu Shihan in your part of the USA go to the website " Hakkoryu Jujutsu and Koho Igaku Shiatau "
Locate Instructors list and scroll down to name of Shihan in your State and reach out to them. They can give you more information for their STATE in where to train under a legitimate Hakkoryu Jujutsu practitioner. I am the only Hakkoryu Jujutsu Shihan in Pennsylvania authorized to teach Hakkoryu Jujutsu by the Headmaster Nidai Soke Okuyama, Omiya, Japan.
Seniors can certainly train in this art. School systems, Hospitals/Medical Centers and Police would greatly benefit from Hakkoryu even as a supplement to an existing program/ curriculum.

Teaching Hakkoryu Jujutsu and Kodokan Judo
Minimum age 13

Location: Friedens Lutheran Church ( lower level }
Myerstown, Pennsylvania

TOPIC: Why study Hakkoryu Jujutsu and Kodokan Judo ?

Hakkoryu Jujutsu is strictly a self-defense system and has no competition. It is a humane form of self-defense and has the following " tenets" 1. No challenge 2. No resistance 3. No injury

What does this mean if you are not a martial sport system with competition or designs of causing injury to the attacker/competitor?
Hakkoryu Jujutsu is a humane form of self-defense that provides you with flexibility in your response to an assailant from mild to (severe) if required. Hakkoryu gives you options in your response.
Not like some martial arts that have no other option than to cause injury by striking or severe mat work.
The Hakkoryu structure has a world headquarters in Omiya, Japan under the direction of Nidai Soke Okuyama. All Shihan in the USA and worldwide follow Nidai Soke and Hombu regulations.
Those who may be interested can look up Hakkoryu Jujutsu and learn the history of this art created in 1941 by Shodai Soke Okuyama.
You can see the listing of all Shihan worldwide. In the USA look at the listing and scroll down to 2016 and you will see my name as Shihan in Pennsylvania.
Studying Hakkoryu Jujutsu is ideal for Police, Healthcare workers and Teachers. Remember the aim is not to cause injury whenever possible.

Kodokan Judo as a martial art and NOT martial sport emphasizes also No challenge No Resistance No injury.

1. Like Hakkoryu ( no challenge ) we don't want to fight !
2. Like Hakkoryu ( no resistance ) we don't antagonize !
3. Like Hakkoryu ( no injury ) we don't want to hurt the assailant!

Yes Judo is an olympic sport and includes throws and has over 60 plus throws. Holds, Chokes, Joint locks and Striking.

Southam Dojo LLC teaches Judo as a traditional Japanese martial art/ means of self-defense and NOT sport.

Teaching HAKKORYU JUJUTSU and KODOKAN JUDO

Friedens Lutheran Church
Myerstown, Pennsylvania ( lower level )

Topic: This information is to help guide those teachers who teach multiple martial arts and say they have a class teaching Kodokan Judo. This will help you with information That ALL Judo teachers know or should know.
1. Judo students should be taught Judo terminology
2. Falling techniques --- koho ukemi
o-ho ukemi
zempo ukemi
zempo kaiten ukemi
3. Kuzushi --- Tsukuri ---- kake
off balancing, positioning, application of the throw

4. various postures in judo
shizentai
shizen hontai
migi shizentai
hidari shizentai
jigo hontai
migi jigotai
hidari jigotai

5. principles of KUZUSHI

6. Classifications of techniques

Nage waza -- subdivisions
Katame waza ---subdivisons
Atemi waza

All of us who teach Judo may arrange our classes each time a little different due to what area we plan to focus on that day/evening. such as a Judo teacher might focus on mat techniques one night and throwing techniques on a different night and this is OK. Might have time to focus on both throwing and mat work teaching the basic holds, chokes, joint locks found in Judo.

BUT EVERY CLASS SHOULD INCLUDE the teaching of NAGE WAZA before you focus on other areas.
Every Judo teacher who teaches Nage Waza MUST have their students perform " UCHIKOMI " when learning throws. For those teachers who might practice other arts and have added a Judo class. This means form fitting or practicing the throw repeatedly.
Judo Sensei already know this from their many years of practice.
Also for those adding a Judo class. There are 40 basic throws called " GOKYO NO WAZA" that most students learn up to the rank of
Shodan black belt - 1st degree blackbelt.
In addition to learning the Nage No Kata

Other throws are listed under the shinmeisho no waza plus the additional 8 throws that were excluded and eventually reinstated in Judo.
Most students study the Gokyo No Waza up to 1 st degree and Nage Nage No Kata

The Gokyo No Waza is divided into a listing of 8 throws per section.

Many Judo sensei teach Judo as an Olympic Sport and that is fine and are members of national organizations that have sport Judo as their primary focus.
Judo teachers like myself teach Kodokan Judo as a traditional Japanese Martial art with the focus on the martial art aspect /self-defense. Whether you study Sport Judo or Martial art Judo, WE all study the same throws. It is our secondary interests that is different.
SPORT JUDO focus and application to competition OR

MARTIAL ART focus and application to Self-Defense.

In conclusion those who aren't quite sure about their Judo addition of programs. It might not be your teacher's fault due to their just passing on how they were taught to you and you continue the trend onto your students.
Kodokan Judo has something to offer everyone.

Southam Dojo LLC offers TWO martial arts
Minimum age 13 years old
ONE FEE covers all who reside in same home which means for $80 per month the family ( parents/youth ) can study one or both martial arts.

Topic: Recent Judo seminar completed.
I want to thank the "Harrisburg Judo Kai" for allowing me to do a Judo clinic entitled " JUDO SELF-DEFENSE APPLICATION ".
The program was well received by about 20 participants both youth and adults.
The program covered many areas from using various Judo throws against grabs, chokes and strikes. Also using techniques in a more gentle way as not to cause injury. Plus restraining/controlling an individual.
it was a pleasure working with everyone!

Topic: Women's Defensive Measures

We here how various self-defense classes are being held at this facility or another and techniques are thrown out to the women to learn within a period of weeks. This is all fantastic due to the fact that it starts women to develop a mindset of thinking about self-defense or how do I protect myself and my children.
You may join a martial arts school such as Karate or Taekwondo which is excellent if you have the determination to continue your training.
May I suggest you first begin with studying a program that has an emphasis on situational awareness and self-defense at the beginning of your training or program and moving on to distance training through the techniques of Karate and Taekwondo.
Meaning learn techniques that are common up close and personal such as various attacks where a woman may be grabbed or secured with a bearhug, female assailant reaching for or has grabbed your hair, hoop earrings, necklace etc., etc.,. Situational defence against for example someone trying to place their arm across your shoulder, hands around your hips and pulling you towards them.
a scenario where an assailant has you in a front two handed choke, Or your hand or arm is suddenly grabbed and you are being pulled where you don't want to go such as into a car, alley, house or towards a group of shady characters in a dark location.
There are many situations such as these to INCLUDE situations in the home by family members.

You then can TRANSITION to fighting back scenarios where your Punching. Kicking, Blocking and Parrying skills can be added to the above situations . Then blending it all together to fit your mindset. But you first start with the personal space intrusion and physical contact. Then as I mentioned you are not yet having to respond to a physical touch or movement towards you.
Simply stated you train in various progressive stages of Physical Management of Aggressive Behavior.

If you just want to take a short course and learn just a few things that can be applicable to several types of aggression that is OK. BUT you should practice, practice, practice so your reaction is automatic.
hope this can be of help.
There are Punching and Kicking Arts in Lebanon, Pennsylvania that have excellent teachers such as Isshinryu Karate and Family Karate teaching TKD.
Southam Dojo LLC teaching Hakkoryu Jujutsu and Kodokan Judo.

Remember fighting is when two individuals can retreat and walk away but choose to remain to face each other.

SELF-DEFENSE is when your person is being assaulted and you must protect yourself. You are physically grabbed or hit and cannot retreat/run. If you can protect yourself to a point where you are able to extricate yourself from the situation then RUN and seek safety.

Topic: Women and Self-Defense Training !

This topic is unique in that the needs of women are in many cases different than those of men in studying martial arts. The common denominator for both is possibility of BEING ASSAULTED!!!!
In this topic we are not discussing the psychological affects, trauma or reasons why perpetrators do what they do against females.
What will be mentioned are the martial arts that would greatly benefit all women in various stages of life: young, middle age, and seniors.

FIRST is knowing what LEGITIMATE martial art schools are in your town/city. SECOND is asking yourself what martial art interests me if any. THIRD is ask yourself how involved do I want to be in this martial art.

1. Karate -Taekwondo
Great for learning how to strike with various parts of the body
and learning techniques against multiple assailants. Helps to
improve your fitness level. If the teacher knows how to teach
various age groups.

2. Aikido -- Excellent for women who prefer due to personal
reasons not wanting to cause injury to the assailant. More
flowing/ re-directing of movement. However, the joint locks can
can be devastating and painful if needed.

3. Kodokan Judo -- EXCELLENT if taught as a martial art and not
sport. YES I teach Judo but strictly as a means of -self-defense.
Sport judo and martial art Judo learn many of the same
techniques but the applications are different : sport is contest
self-defense is just that self protection and learning many areas
not allowed in Judo contest such as self-defense against a club,
multiple assailants, etc. ,etc. etc.,.

4. Hakkoryu Jujutsu ---- Excellent for women in that no difficult
warmups and requires little to no strength. You practice kneeling
and standing.

Locations around Lebanon Pennsylvania

Lebanon Isshinryu Karate School Lebanon, Pennsylvania

Family Karate ( Taekwondo ) Lebanon, Pennsylvania

Aikido Reading, Pennsylvania

Kodokan Judo Southam Dojo LLC, Myerstown, Pennsylvania

Hakkoryu Jujutsu Southam Dojo LLC, Myerstown, Pennsylvania

21 st Century Martial arts ( BJJ ) Myerstown, Pennsylvania

Centerline Martial Arts ( Kempo Karate / Yoshitsune Jujutsu )
Myerstown, Pennsylvania

As a woman you need to find a Martial Art that fits you.
If you are older and have some issues physically. You might want a softer yet effective art. If there aren't any where you Live.
Then visit dojo and ask questions and observe.
Then pick one you think you can do.
I wouldn't look for a grappling art such a Judo which has throws, holds, chokes jointlocks and striking. Of course you don't have to go to the ground in Judo or other arts but you must consider this. WHY you ask?

Simply because of the following scenarios:
You take a person to the ground when attacked. Did you see if he/she had any weapons before going to the ground and getting a nice hold, choke, lock? NO NO NO!!

Are you going to say"if I let you up, you promise you won't hurt me".They will agree to anything to get free and attack again.

Did you look around before going to the ground to see if the attacker has any friends that will hurt or kill you while on the ground with attacker?
Chances are NO.

Will you restrain them all night till help arrives in morning. Not feasible.

Judo mat techniques and grappling arts are nice to study in a sport setting but unless you are attacked in a nice environment with help in the area. You might want to study more standing type arts.Remember today even martial arts have been turned into sports.
Practice techniques where you are suddenly pushed or thrown to the ground.Take action and quickly fight to get to standing position and RUN RUN RUN.
You want to study MARTIAL ARTS and NOT MARTIAL SPORTS. Your primary goal is SELF-DEFENSE and NOT a GAME with RULES.

Some martial arts can be very physically demanding and painful.
Visit various martial art programs, ask questions, observe one or
two classes.

Myerstown, Pennsylvania As a woman you need to find a Martial Art that fits you.
If you are older and have some issues physically. You might want a softer yet effective art. If there arent any where you Live.
Then visit dojo and ask questions and observe.
Then pick one you think you can do.
I wouldnt look for a grappling art such a Judo which has throws, holds, chokes jointlocks and striking. Of course you dont have to go to the ground in Judo or other arts but you must consider this. WHY you ask? Simply because of the following scenarios:
You take a person to the ground when attacked. Did you see if he/she had any weapons before going to the ground and getting a nice hold, choke, lock? NO NO NO!! Are you going to sayif I let you up, you promise you wont hurt me.They will agree to anything to get free and attack again.
