Teaching Kodokan Judo and Hakkoryu Jujutsu
minimum age 13 years old

Topic: Recent Judo seminar completed.
I want to thank the "Harrisburg Judo Kai" for allowing me to do a Judo clinic entitled " JUDO SELF-DEFENSE APPLICATION ".
The program was well received by about 20 participants both youth and adults.
The program covered many areas from using various Judo throws against grabs, chokes and strikes. Also using techniques in a more gentle way as not to cause injury. Plus restraining/controlling an individual.
it was a pleasure working with everyone!

Topic: Women's Defensive Measures

We here how various self-defense classes are being held at this facility or another and techniques are thrown out to the women to learn within a period of weeks. This is all fantastic due to the fact that it starts women to develop a mindset of thinking about self-defense or how do I protect myself and my children.
You may join a martial arts school such as Karate or Taekwondo which is excellent if you have the determination to continue your training.
May I suggest you first begin with studying a program that has an emphasis on situational awareness and self-defense at the beginning of your training or program and moving on to distance training through the techniques of Karate and Taekwondo.
Meaning learn techniques that are common up close and personal such as various attacks where a woman may be grabbed or secured with a bearhug, female assailant reaching for or has grabbed your hair, hoop earrings, necklace etc., etc.,. Situational defence against for example someone trying to place their arm across your shoulder, hands around your hips and pulling you towards them.
a scenario where an assailant has you in a front two handed choke, Or your hand or arm is suddenly grabbed and you are being pulled where you don't want to go such as into a car, alley, house or towards a group of shady characters in a dark location.
There are many situations such as these to INCLUDE situations in the home by family members.

You then can TRANSITION to fighting back scenarios where your Punching. Kicking, Blocking and Parrying skills can be added to the above situations . Then blending it all together to fit your mindset. But you first start with the personal space intrusion and physical contact. Then as I mentioned you are not yet having to respond to a physical touch or movement towards you.
Simply stated you train in various progressive stages of Physical Management of Aggressive Behavior.

If you just want to take a short course and learn just a few things that can be applicable to several types of aggression that is OK. BUT you should practice, practice, practice so your reaction is automatic.
hope this can be of help.
There are Punching and Kicking Arts in Lebanon, Pennsylvania that have excellent teachers such as Isshinryu Karate and Family Karate teaching TKD.
Southam Dojo LLC teaching Hakkoryu Jujutsu and Kodokan Judo.

Remember fighting is when two individuals can retreat and walk away but choose to remain to face each other.

SELF-DEFENSE is when your person is being assaulted and you must protect yourself. You are physically grabbed or hit and cannot retreat/run. If you can protect yourself to a point where you are able to extricate yourself from the situation then RUN and seek safety.

Topic: Women and Self-Defense Training !

This topic is unique in that the needs of women are in many cases different than those of men in studying martial arts. The common denominator for both is possibility of BEING ASSAULTED!!!!
In this topic we are not discussing the psychological affects, trauma or reasons why perpetrators do what they do against females.
What will be mentioned are the martial arts that would greatly benefit all women in various stages of life: young, middle age, and seniors.

FIRST is knowing what LEGITIMATE martial art schools are in your town/city. SECOND is asking yourself what martial art interests me if any. THIRD is ask yourself how involved do I want to be in this martial art.

1. Karate -Taekwondo
Great for learning how to strike with various parts of the body
and learning techniques against multiple assailants. Helps to
improve your fitness level. If the teacher knows how to teach
various age groups.

2. Aikido -- Excellent for women who prefer due to personal
reasons not wanting to cause injury to the assailant. More
flowing/ re-directing of movement. However, the joint locks can
can be devastating and painful if needed.

3. Kodokan Judo -- EXCELLENT if taught as a martial art and not
sport. YES I teach Judo but strictly as a means of -self-defense.
Sport judo and martial art Judo learn many of the same
techniques but the applications are different : sport is contest
self-defense is just that self protection and learning many areas
not allowed in Judo contest such as self-defense against a club,
multiple assailants, etc. ,etc. etc.,.

4. Hakkoryu Jujutsu ---- Excellent for women in that no difficult
warmups and requires little to no strength. You practice kneeling
and standing.

As a woman you need to find a Martial Art that fits you.
If you are older and have some issues physically. You might want a softer yet effective art. If there aren't any where you Live.
Then visit dojo and ask questions and observe.
Then pick one you think you can do.
I wouldn't look for a grappling art such a Judo which has throws, holds, chokes jointlocks and striking. Of course you don't have to go to the ground in Judo or other arts but you must consider this. WHY you ask?

Simply because of the following scenarios:
You take a person to the ground when attacked. Did you see if he/she had any weapons before going to the ground and getting a nice hold, choke, lock? NO NO NO!!

Are you going to say"if I let you up, you promise you won't hurt me".They will agree to anything to get free and attack again.

Did you look around before going to the ground to see if the attacker has any friends that will hurt or kill you while on the ground with attacker?
Chances are NO.

Will you restrain them all night till help arrives in morning. Not feasible.

Judo mat techniques and grappling arts are nice to study in a sport setting but unless you are attacked in a nice environment with help in the area. You might want to study more standing type arts.Remember today even martial arts have been turned into sports.
Practice techniques where you are suddenly pushed or thrown to the ground.Take action and quickly fight to get to standing position and RUN RUN RUN.
You want to study MARTIAL ARTS and NOT MARTIAL SPORTS. Your primary goal is SELF-DEFENSE and NOT a GAME with RULES.

Some martial arts can be very physically demanding and painful.
Visit various martial art programs, ask questions, observe one or
two classes.
